 Okay, I called the Passport Information office and the lady there said I had been wrongly informed at the post office. As I have had a passport in the name I want, they have the records and the PO people can ring them directly if they like, and confirm that it's okay. 

My sister suggests I try to find my old passport, just in case, and I will have a look for it. I can only hope that it is where I think it is. Thing is, I just haven't used it in years. After this, I will buy a metal box and keep my important papers in it.

Then I'll probably mislay the metal box.

You get change of name certificates from the Dept of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Though I think I actually downloaded mine, but that's where I had to take it and pay them money. It's pretty easy, if you actually needed to do it!

Of course, you've had a name change in recent months! I'd forgotten. I assume it simplified your passport when you were going to Finland?

Well, yes; I changed my name three years ago and the passport as well.

Goes to show how much I was reading my Livejournal... Three years, eh? But very sensible to get it out of the way all at once. Thing is, you did it officially, of your own choice. My parents just Anglicised my name when I was starting school, and it never occurred to any of us that it might be a problem. It was never changed officially. But it's all sorted now - and my friend Bart, who came over to sign my photo, said he had had to do the whole change of name thing a couple of years back. He is an adoptee and when he wanted to get back his birth name, he had more work to do than I did, because my official documents are all in the Anglicised name, while his were in his adopted parents' name.
